The best part about hosting, especially hosting at home, is that you can absolutely host a party for any reason. And for the many people who can’t make it to Oktoberfest this year, they can easily host their very own Oktoberfest party at home!
What is Oktoberfest?
Oktoberfest is a massive festival celebrated in the city of Munich in Bavaria, Germany, every year at the end of September and beginning of October. The festival was originally a wedding celebration for the crown prince, but it has grown to be a massive celebration of culture.
Oktoberfest combines a beer festival and fair, and the event attracts millions every year. German, especially Bavarian, food and culture are at the forefront of the celebration. There are tons of events and activities, and it’s an all-around good time. However, not everyone can make it to Munich on a yearly basis (sadly). So many places have begun hosting their own Oktoberfest celebrations and festivals. And some have begun celebrating with smaller versions to bring a bit of Bavaria home, which is probably why you are here.

Oktoberfest Invitation
Per usual, we start with the invitation. Your invitation is the foundation of your party. The invitation is the first point of contact and an opportunity to have fun, show off your personality, and set the tone of the event. The invitation allows you to set that tone and the expectations early.
For this theme, you can get really creative but also stay true to your style. If your personal style is maximalism or lots of personality, show that in your invitation. If you prefer something more classic, stick to something in the Oktoberfest color scheme. Do add some nods to the theme; however, this isn’t really a stuffy party theme, so there’s no need to be too reserved.

Oktoberfest Party Color Scheme
The color scheme for this party theme can go in a few directions. Traditionally, Oktoberfest is decorated in blue and white because of the two flags of Bavaria, the German state in which Oktoberfest is celebrated. As it is a German event, some people also like to lean into the colors of the German flag to bring that more on-the-nose flair.
If you decide to do blue and white, you can add some darker blue tones for some contrast and depth, but don’t go overboard; stick true to the colors of the Bavarian flag as much as possible.

You can also do a bit of both color palettes, just keep them balanced and don’t overdo it so much that it becomes overstimulating. You can also add texture to assist your color scheme, such as wooden serveware, reminiscent of the wooden tables found in the tents and the wooden kegs.
You can also add elements of galvanized steel or silver that pay homage to the old beer steins. Lastly, don’t forget to use elements you already have in creative ways. Do you have more beer steins than you need? Use some as vessels or holders. Make your pretzel display both functional and decorative by creatively showing them.
Oktoberfest Vibes
Before you start on decor, you will want to decide exactly how intense you want this theme to come across, because it can get really fun, fast.
If you want a subtle approach to the decor, opt for a few strategically placed decorative banners. You can also purchase or create some signage, in the style of the celebration, to label the food. Obviously, after creating a menu inspired by Oktoberfest. Table linens in the color scheme will communicate the theme without being so overt. Floral arrangements that consist of wheat, and perhaps blue and white florals or accents, would also be a nice touch. Lean into the Autumnal aspect of the festival with a blue and brown table setting for something less overt, but don’t skip the fun. Consider adding something small, like pretzel napkin rings.
If you want to go all out, here are some things to consider adding to your space. Go crazy with the banners, ribbons, and flags. If you are planning activities, make or purchase signs and displays that fit the theme for each one. Place tons of pretzel and beer references everywhere, like German Beer Steins, pretzel charms, and plenty of actual beer and pretzels.
