What is Spring Cleaning?

Spring cleaning is just what it sounds like. As the seasons change, and the house goes from being sealed up tight to retain heat to open and airy to let in the warm weather, many people feel the need to give the house a refresh or a deep cleaning. This allows you to knock off the literal and metaphorical cobwebs that accumulated during the winter.

For most, spring cleaning is when they check things off of their cleaning checklist for the year. Because spring cleaning is often a deeper, more meticulous cleaning, people tend to save major cleaning tasks for this time and do them all at once.

How Do You Upgrade A Deep Spring Cleaning?

Spring cleaning in itself is already the highest level of cleaning for most, so it’s hard to imagine stepping it up even more. However, because of the focus on both macro and micro details, some things get lost in the middle. Those things that you could get done on an average day but they just aren’t important enough. Those midlevel tasks are where you can find your space to upgrade. You can upgrade, or elevate, your spring cleaning by attending to some of those middle tasks that may slip through the cracks.

These easy tips are both affordable and easy to do, and they are most likely things that did not make your spring cleaning checklist, but you will appreciate them nonetheless. Think low investment, high return.

1. Out With The Old

While spring cleaning focuses on the cleaning of everything, it can neglect refreshing or replacing items that are no longer of use or causing problems. Swap out any run-down plastic food storage for glass food storage.

Not only will the investment last longer, but you won’t have to scrub broken-down pieces of plastic trying to remove stains. The new food storage also gives you an opportunity to reorganize the space. A newly organized space and new items will also give you a refreshed outlook on your kitchen to go along with the freshly cleaned space.

2. Spring Coffee Station Swaps

Make some adjustments to reflect the refresh and the season. Coffee stations see a lot of action during the cold months and often become coffee/tea/hot chocolate bars leaving them to hold onto a lot of materials and ingredients. Consider swapping out things such as mugs, flavored syrups, and decorations for more seasonal options.

Swap out your winter mugs for more colorful options. If color isn’t your thing, swap out your black mugs for browns and whites to lighten the space. Replace the winter spices and peppermint syrups while you’re at it. To add some springtime to your coffee station, consider adding a vase of fresh or faux flours.

3. Grab Some Fresh Herbs

Add fresh herbs to your kitchen or update your existing herbs or their pots. Fresh herbs will not only be useful in your cooking but they will also bring some life to the kitchen.

If you cannot maintain fresh flowers, you can show off your herb garden! While you’re showing off, you can also have access to fresh, in-season herbs to go with any fresh new spring recipes you’re trying out. If you need some inspiration in that department, click here!

4. Sharpen Your Knives

Focusing on the already extensive list of things that need to be done for spring cleaning means that some things slip through the cracks. Add one more quick item to your list and take this time to show some love and care to the often neglected knives.

While a knife sharpener can definitely get the job done, if you’d really like to give your knives the best chance consider grabbing a sharpening stone to get your knives to the highest quality possible. Sharp knives will ensure that you can operate your fresh spring kitchen with the best tools available.

5. Restock, Replace, and Repot Your Spices

Spring kitchen ideas often revolve around the decor, and while that is helpful, sometimes you also need something practical to boost your mood. An easy way to do this is to show your spices some love.

Whether you have a spice rack or a spice drawer, it will boost your mood to approach your spices and know they are all stocked and ready to use. If you really want to go the extra mile, make them better both functionally and aesthetically by swapping out the jars for uniform jars and labels. It will make it much easier to identify and keep track of your spices, and they will most likely sit in their space better.

6. Bring Florals in Unexpected Ways:

Everyone knows that it’s really spring when you start putting out the gorgeous spring blooms and while you should absolutely bring fresh flowers into the kitchen, if you want to really push the springtime vibes, consider adding in florals in the form of decor or kitchen tools.

Fresh flowers, hand towels, and oven mitts are the usual suspects. Try adding a small rug near the sink for an unexpected addition. If you’re brave enough, you can even change out the major textiles like swapping out your cafe curtains. If you don’t want to mess with the fabrics in the kitchen, add florals into your kitchen tools, like this floral cutting board, that serve both fashion and function.

As you prepare to do your deep clean, be sure to break it up to make it manageable. Spread your spring cleaning out over a few days by creating a schedule. You can also break your tasks up into major, mid, and minor details.

Major detail things will be like cleaning your windows, while minor details will be things like the baseboards. Mid level things, like we have discussed will be those things that you could do on any day, if you’re able to get around to them.

Once you’ve created your categories and placed your tasks into them, choose some ways to go the extra mile. Take inspiration from us and do one of the tasks above or branch out on your own. Happy cleaning!
